Discovering Halkidiki
Spring is already bursting into bloom across the Halkidiki peninsulas, one of the most sought-after holiday destinations on the mainland of Greece. As most of northern Europe and the eastern USA battle with storms, this verdant region is full of the sunny, verdant promises of the new season.
Like many people, my experience of Greece is defined by city breaks to Athens and summer island hopping. The beaches and forests of the mainland had remained relatively unknown. Yet that all changed when I flew to Thessaloniki, the second city of Greece, to visit the Sani Resort.
Arriving in Thessaloniki
Despite its long history, this booming city looks relatively new. Much of the historic center was destroyed in the great fire of 1917. Yet the city is still a wonderful destination – it is buzzing! It has a wonderful cocktail and dining scene and lots of beautiful independent stores and boutiques.
Sani Resort is only a 40-minute transfer from Thessaloniki airport, which is usually included in your holiday at Sani. I decided to extend my visit with a night in the city of Thessaloniki as I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to discover more of the city.
The drive to Sani is pretty straightforward on highways that whisk you to the first of Halkidiki’s smaller peninsulas, called Kassandra. The other two peninsulas, like fingers dipping into the sea, are Sithonia and also Athos (the last is a closed community of monks and is considered an independent state).
As you approach the resort, you are greeted by stunning views of the Aegean Sea and the lush green hills of Kassandra. The resort itself is incredibly well-maintained and has a very Mediterranean feel to it. There are five different hotels to choose from, each with its unique personality. I stayed at the Sani Beach Hotel, which is located right on the beach and has stunning views of the sea.
Sani Resort
Sani Resort is a large resort located on the Kassandra peninsula in Greece. It is a popular destination for families, couples, and groups of friends. The resort is home to five hotels, each with its unique personality. There are also a variety of restaurants, bars, pools, spas, and activities to keep guests entertained.
Here is a brief overview of each hotel:
- Sani Beach: This is the largest hotel in the resort and is located right on the beach. It is a popular choice for families and couples. The hotel has a variety of restaurants, bars, pools, and activities to keep guests entertained.
- Sani Club: This is a more secluded hotel located at the far end of the resort. It is surrounded by nature and has stunning views of the Aegean Sea. The hotel is a popular choice for couples and adults who are looking for a relaxing vacation.
- Sani Dunes: This is a modern hotel that is located close to the Sani Marina. The hotel has a variety of restaurants, bars, pools, and activities to keep guests entertained. Sani Dunes is a popular choice for couples and families with older children.
- Sani Asterias: This is a family-friendly hotel that is located close to Sani Beach. The hotel has a variety of restaurants, bars, pools, and activities to keep guests entertained. Sani Asterias is a popular choice for families with younger children.
- Porto Sani: This is a small hotel that is located in the Sani Marina. The hotel has a variety of restaurants, bars, and shops. Porto Sani is a popular choice for couples and adults who are looking for a relaxing vacation.
Sani Resort Dining
Sani Resort is a world-class resort located on the Kassandra peninsula in Greece. It is a popular destination for families, couples, and groups of friends. The resort is home to five hotels, each with its unique personality. There are also a variety of restaurants, bars, pools, spas, and activities to keep guests entertained.
Dining
Sani Resort offers a wide variety of dining options, from casual to fine dining. Restaurants are serving a variety of cuisines, including Greek, Italian, Mediterranean, and Asian. There are also several bars and cafes, where guests can enjoy a drink and a snack.
Specialty Restaurants
Sani Resort has several specialty restaurants, including:
- Sani Marina: This restaurant offers a modern take on Greek cuisine. The menu features fresh, locally-sourced ingredients.
- Sani Asterias: This restaurant offers a traditional Greek taverna experience. The menu features classic Greek dishes, such as moussaka and souvlaki.
- Sani Dunes: This restaurant offers a Mediterranean fusion menu. The menu features dishes from Greece, Italy, Spain, and France.
- Porto Sani: This restaurant offers a seafood restaurant. The menu features fresh, locally-caught seafood.
Sani Resort is a great place to bring children. Several restaurants offer special menus for children. The menus are designed to be both healthy and delicious.
Sani’s Farm-to-Table Approach
Sani Resort is committed to using fresh, local ingredients in its restaurants. Over 60% of the produce used in the resort’s restaurants comes from within 100 miles of the resort. The resort also has its own herb and vegetable gardens, which the chefs use daily.
Not all-inclusive Sani Resort. Although there is also the full-board option, which includes all meals, there were fewer restaurants that provided the full-board menus. I would advocate having the freedom to eat anywhere you like, but of course, this is more expensive. Alcohol was especially pricey in Greece compared to non-resort locations.
There were some very exceptional, must-visit eateries, like Lima for modern Peruvian food. For Japanese cuisine, including excellent sushi, there is Katsu, and Stephanie Le Quellec’s outstanding Over Water restaurant has two Michelin stars. David Ibarboure and Ettore Botrini each have one Michelin star for their work at “El Puerto” and “Fresco,” respectively.
Each hotel has an a la carte option as well as more kid-friendly buffet breakfasts, and the quality was superb.
Lunch options include quick eats at any of the all-day eating establishments or in the marina.
Sani has developed a highly user-friendly smartphone app that enables you to log in with your booking reservation credentials and explore all the restaurants before making appointments. At first, the large number of options may appear daunting, but Sani has built it. You may do the same with all athletic events using the app.
Family Time
The Porto Sani, Sani Beach, and Sani Club all provide complimentary accommodations for children, placing families at the center of Sani Resort’s opulent amenities. Along with offering complimentary luxury goods and exciting activities for children ages 0-12, the resort also makes sure that parents and kids can have time apart by providing private nanny services, crèches, a kids club, and seaside childcare. At Sani Marina, older children between the ages of 12 and 17 have access to a special area where they may socialize, explore new things to do, and have some autonomous fun.
Sani’s free “Babewatch team” that watched over visitors’ children in the shallows so that parents may have 30 minutes to themselves to enjoy the beaches struck me as particularly inventive.
Another excellent feature is the free provision of baby gear, in-room amenities, strollers, etc., allowing parents to travel light.
On the menu are activities like scuba diving, canoeing, cooking, or dance, as well as courses offered by Academies like the Bear Grylls Academy, where students may acquire survival skills. The resort includes a specialized Little Guests staff, as well as physicians and emergency healthcare, so parents can feel at ease about their children’s safety.
Experiences
Sani Resort makes the most of its beachfront setting by offering a wide variety of water activities as well as Aegean boat trips. Ten kilometers of woodland paths are also available for bikers and walkers, and five spas provide rejuvenating and calming services.
In addition to this, Sani Resort offers a dedicated VIP Services Team that will arrange specialized excursions to meet the particular demands of your family, whether it be a boat cruise or private dining.Academies
The sports academies in general, the Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy, the Chelsea Football Club Academy, and the Bear Grylls Survival Academy, as well as a fitness center, yoga on the beach, and mountain biking through the forest, are without a doubt the main draws.
The Survival Academy of Bear Grylls
Some elite athletes will attend the academies this summer:
Tennis Academy of Rafa Nadal
The Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca is led by former Rafa Nadal coach Toni Nadal, who will be at Sani Resort from May 1 to May 5. He will oversee all of the courts at the Rafa Nadal Tennis Centre every day, as well as be available to guests for autographs and conversation. He will also be sharing his invaluable expertise and experience with them.
From July 8 through July 15, Carlos Moya, who is currently Rafa Nadal’s coach and the tennis director at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, will serve as the center’s head coach and impart the knowledge and strategies that have helped Rafa win a record-breaking 22 Grand Slam men’s singles titles.
Football Academy at Chelsea
Ashley Cole will be at Sani Resort from July 21 to July 30. He will make special appearances at the Chelsea Football Academy, where he will supervise the football courts, offer guidance, and autograph t-shirts for our visitors.
Sani Festival 2022 | Andrea Bocelli Concert
The beloved Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli gave an outstanding performance on August 20 as Sani Festival, which was celebrating its 30th year, came to an end. Thessaloniki’s State Symphony Orchestra, the dulcet tones of @athenamusic, @crispasaroiu, and @alikimusic, along with Bocelli’s superb voice, provided the ideal cap to the summer’s celebrations as he serenaded the night sky from Sani Hill.
